«Деньги на двоих», как и «Револьвер», – это фильм об Игре; правда, в отличие от «Револьвера» сам он не фильм-игра, не фильм-ловушка и не фильм-преступление. Это история о… История об азарте, которая на самом деле даже и не об азарте, а о том, что за ним, прежде и глубже его: о желании неудачника почувствовать на мгновение (а еще лучше – в непрекращающейся череде рождающих и все интенсивнее перекрывающих друг друга сладких мгновений) истинный вкус (к) жизни. Режиссер Д. Дж. Карузо, отметившийся до этого двумя очень недурными фильмами – «Море Солтона» и «Забирая жизни» (о втором мне даже довелось здесь писать: см. архив рецензий сайта), конечно, гроздьями не хватает с неба созвездий, но остр и цепок в деталях и довольно сведущ в главном. А главное в «Деньгах на двоих» – повышение градуса Игры, перековывающее человека в супермена, который внутри – «тряпка», раб неотступного и пьянящего инстинкта.
Брэндон Лэнг (Мэтью МакКоноги) с детства играет на всю катушку. Сначала – в американский футбол, чтобы победами и призами удержать в семье пьяницу-отца: «Спорт для отца был религией, для меня – очищением». Восхищенная отцовская улыбка для Брэндона – наркотик, ради которого он готов возгонять свою игру-жизнь в плюс- или минус-бесконечность. Но отец выбирает бутылку: семья обречена на распад и утрату, опыт игры – бессмыслен. Однако Брэндон продолжает дело своей жизни: он становится профессионалом в американском футболе, пока травма колена не выбивает его из строя. Дальше – предсказание итогов матчей в маленькой фирме спортпрогнозов: день за днем, год за годом в тесной кабинке с узким столом и приставленным к носу компьютером, пока однажды знаменитый владелец более крупного предприятия Уолтер Эбрамс (Аль Пачино) не призывает удачливого Брэндона в сподвижники. Вместе они сыграют по-крупному: Брэндон поставит на кон (точнее сказать – посадит на кол) свою личность, став беспроигрышным сверхчеловеком по имени Джон Энтони, Уолтер сделает ставкой свою жену (бывшую наркоманку: точная – супружеская – симметрия физиологического и психического наркотизма), свою перспективу навсегда остаться одиноким и свой инстинкт игры.
Ключевых моментов здесь два. Первый – когда Уолтер с Брэндоном заявляются на сеанс коллективной терапии плотно подсевших на спортивные ставки джентльменов, где Уолтер произносит впечатляющую речь. Ваша проблема, говорит он ноющим оглашателям тоскливых исповедей, не в азарте, а в том, что вы – слабые, никчемные, ни на что не годные людишки – в момент ставки пытаетесь почувствовать себя на высоте восторга, в эпицентре судьбы. Не тратьте время, добавляет он цинично, по ходу дела раздавая визитки, а обращайтесь-ка лучше в мою контору – за прогнозом для новых игр. Весь фокус в том, что едкий монолог Уолтера – филиппика не столько в адрес плачущих бесхребетных толстяков, сколько в свой собственный адрес. Только играет Уолтер радикальнее: его наркотик – не просто ставки на исход матчей (хотя и эту страсть он не обходит стороной), но ставка на свою звезду, которую равно можно назвать и Джоном Энтони, и бесконечно усиливающимся предчувствием вот-вот грянущей Великой Игры (не важно, с каким результатом): игры деньгами, общественным признанием и душами. Соответственно второй ключевой момент – диалог Уолтера со своей второй половиной (Рене Руссо), которая, обрисовав вышесказанное, говорит, что ему не удастся втянуть себя в смертельное и вечное одиночество, подстроив супружескую измену и собственный морально-финансовый крах.
К несчастью, фильм венчается чересчур благостным финалом, а упругая и мощная художественная артерия, непрерывно подпитывающая картину незамусоленным смыслом, перерезается торжествующей в итоге заботливой мелодрамой. Хлесткая и язвительная плоть Игры тонет в потоке спасительных чувств, а назидательная сцена с тренировкой детской команды довершает банальный парад-алле расхожих (и, если угодно, отхожих – во всех значениях этого слова) моралите. Жаль.
