Группа элитных агентов ФБР под руководством Рональда Флери расследует обстоятельства взрыва в американском поселке в Саудовской Аравии. У них есть одна неделя на то, чтобы найти и схватить того, кто стоит за этим чудовищным терактом. Однако никакая тренировка не могла подготовить Флери и его команду ко всем трудностям, которые ожидают их в совершенно чуждой им стране.
Авторы «Королевства» (не путать с детищем Ларса фон Триера и Стивена Кинга, хотя для американцев Саудовская Аравия – как раз уголок в стивен-кинговском вкусе) разрываются между двумя идеями, которые друг с другом соединить в высшей степени сложно. С одной стороны, армия и спецслужбы США выполняют благородную миссию по зачистке окружающего мира от терроризма и насаждению в нем, окружающем мире, благой и прогрессивной демократии. Как удачно выразился кто-то из кинокритиков, одна из целей Соединенных Штатов на Ближнем Востоке – освободить Арабские Эмираты от арабов и эмиров. С другой стороны, совсем уж «ястребиная» идеология служителям десятой музы не к лицу – и потому они стараются по возможности приправлять даже самые одиозные ура-патриотические опусы гуманистическим соусом. «Королевство», пожалуй, вряд ли можно причислить к наиболее одиозным произведениям на заданную тему, хотя история о четырех оч-чень крутых агентах ФБР, расследующих жестокий теракт на саудовской территории против американских граждан, дремуча и малосимпатична. Эта великолепная и фантастическая четверка страдающих комплексом полноценности потных сквернословов, командир коей говорит наследному принцу, который старше него на четверть века: «Мать твою!», у человека более здравомыслящего, чем режиссер Питер Берг, вызвала бы весьма неоднозначные размышления. Что уж говорить о канонической уступке политкорректности – героине Дженнифер Гарнер, идущей на принцев и боевиков с внушительным бюстом наперевес и не вынимающей изо рта «Чупа-чупс»: тут был бы намного уместнее комментарий психоаналитика… В то же время (о, нежданное открытие!) создатели «Королевства» берут на себя смелость утверждать, что и среди мусульман попадаются честные, порядочные и храбрые люди, а некоторые еще даже и с чувством юмора. Оказывается, не все арабы и эмиры взрывают башни в свободное от молитв время. В финале и вовсе делается драматургически сильный ход, один из немногих по-настоящему драматургически сильных ходов в картине: выясняется, что и террористы и фэбээровцы эффективно утешают своих родственников и коллег одной и той же фразой – «Мы убьем их всех».
Вообще, сценарий дебютанта Мэтью Майкла Карнахана, несмотря на идеологические аберрации, кажется во многих отношениях интересным, однако режиссура Питера Берга, постановщика мегабездарного «Сокровища Амазонки», решительно никуда не годится. У Берга была отличная возможность напитать экран магией уличного боя, которую с блеском воспроизвел Ридли Скотт в «Падении “Черного ястреба”», но вместо этого мы наблюдаем киновариант компьютерной стрелялки, где механически выскакивающие из укрытий головы исламистов служат идеальной мишенью для супергероев, прилетевших погреть армейские ботинки на саудовском песочке. Неуместная при столь трагических обстоятельствах крутизна персонажей и неизбежный хэппи-энд делают «Королевство» похожим на фильм о приключениях Рэмбо в Афганистане и множество других произведений, растиражировавших известную модель, несмотря на то что в The Kingdom несколько усложнился психологический рисунок и усовершенствовалась методика и техника съемки. Терроризм, простите за банальное напоминание, – это глобальная трагедия, а вовсе не простыня для демонстрации кинохроники победоносного блицкрига, устроенного самодовольными деревенщинами.
